Aren't butterflies wonderful. They come in so many colors and sizes and their beauty is inspiring. I find them to be one of the hardest subjects to photograph. They seem to delight in teasing me with their beauty and fluttering all around me until I try to take a picture. Then they laughingly dance off, only to come back to tease me again. I also find, the more beautiful the butterfly, the bigger a tease it is. Occasionally though, there have been butterflies that were more than pleased to pose while I snapped away. This pretty little one was one of those. I have taken this photo and added soft light to it to enhance the dreamlike and peaceful quality of the butterfly.

I just adore llamas. They have a unique energy and quality about them. To my utter disappointment however, they don't seem to really like me. One day I stopped to admire two llamas that a woman was out walking with. She told me which one was very friendly and liked everyone, so as I was getting very close to it, it spit at me point blank in the face. The woman was horrified. I just laughed. But the really funny thing is that the other llama that she said doesn't like people much, came right over to me and wanted to be friends. So now, when I photograph or visit llamas, I admire them from a distance until I am quite sure they want my admiration.

This cute black llama was on a farm in a herd and was quite fascinated by me. He has such an intense look on his face it just makes me wonder what he was thinking. Lady Slipper Flowers Lovely Ladies Of The Forest

One of my favorite flowers is the elusive lovely lady of the forest - the lady slipper. They are part of the orchid family and require a certain type of soil to grow. In Massachusetts they are a protected wildflower. They bloom from mid May to mid June and take many years to go from seed to mature plant. Pink lady slippers can live to be 20 years old or more. The pink lady slipper is also sometimes called the moccasin flower.

It is an exciting treat to be walking in the woods and come across these rare beauties. They come in different colors, and I have been lucky enough to photograph pink, yellow, and white ones.

I Rescued A Bird Today

Today's entry has nothing to do with me trying to sell my work. I had an experience this morning while walking my dog that filled me with such joy that I was there to make a difference. If nothing else happens today, I now at least feel I contributed something to the world and life for the day, and I feel the need to share it.

Shane and I were walking by our usual pond at the gravel pit. I heard fluttering in the water near the shore in the reeds. Sure enough, a starling was entangled in fishing line someone had thoughtlessly left behind and would surely drown. Luckily there was a tree nearby, so I tied Shane up so he wouldn't add to the poor bird's anxiety. I quietly talked to the bird, as I could see the fear in his eyes. I gently scooped him out of the water and held him in my hands. He seemed to immediately sense that I was there to help him and quietly stayed in my hands while I worked to untangle the line. As soon as I was finished though and released my grasp, he was more than happy to fly off - very wet, but otherwise fine. The other amazing thing to me was that Shane, who thinks the world centers around him, just quietly sat tied by the tree and watched me. Normally, he would be pulling an extreme hissy fit because he couldn't be right there with me.

I get so angry that so many people who fish, leave their trash and the worst thing, their fishing line behind to become slow death traps to many creatures. If they enjoy being out in nature, I wish they would have the decency to respect what they are enjoying, and leave the place clean and safe for everyone who lives there. Anyone who reads this, if you know people who fish, please urge them to make sure they do not leave behind their fishing line, hooks, and other trash that does endanger the wildlife living there. Because I do nature and wildlife photography, I am out and about and see so much human thoughtlessness and carelessness about the environment and total lack of respect for that which they are enjoying, it often makes me cry.

I love to take pictures! It is such a mystical experience for me at times to see something and try to capture that through a camera. And while all of that is great fun, it loses a lot if I'm the only one who ever looks at it. I am so delighted to be able to offer my photography and digital art images on profile and business cards at my gallery Smilin' Eyes Treasures Photography at Zazzle. It is a wonderful way to be able to share my work, as well as offering unique and different profile and business cards for people to use.

My main focus is flowers and nature, but I also have wildlife, objects, scenery, and I am beginning to delve into the world of digital art using my original photo images. I have set up the cards as a template where you can just fill in your information. You can then completely customize the card by adding, changing, or deleting any text as well as changing background colors, font sizes, styles, and colors. Make it truly your own. On many cards I have the full size image from the front on the back of the card. I can remove that for you if you would like to add text to the back. For The Love Of Retired Racing Greyhounds

Retired racing greyhounds are the most incredible creatures I have met. After spending years of their lives in crates, wearing muzzles, eating "mystery meat", being on a strict routine, many times having to race with injuries, and more not so good quality of life activities, they will come into your home and heart with such gentleness, trust, and love, it always makes me cry.

The 2 years I spent as a greyhound placement representative were the most rewarding of my life. During that time I met some of the most kind, loving, and memorable people and dogs. People who gravitate toward retired greyhounds seem to possess many of the gentle and loving qualities of the greyhounds. I had the honor and privilege of fostering and placing many wonderful dogs with loving and caring people.

And of course, I wound up with several of my own, as any "true" greyhound person will understand, you can't have just one! There's just something about those sweeties!!!!!

They are definitely not a dog for everyone, they do have their own special needs and traits, and as a placement rep, I visited, interviewed, and educated each prospective "parent". Each dog should be evaluated for things like getting along with children, cats, and other small critters. Being a site hound with a natural instinct to chase what they see, plus their added training to run literally for their life after the mechanical bunny at the track, they should never be allowed off leash unless they are in a fenced in area. They also have some health issues, many times as a result from injuries while racing. One of my beautiful "babies" was a Grade A racer named Cash that they were going to put down because he had broken his toes one too many times and wouldn't be making them anymore money.

Another very interesting and amusing trait they seem to have is, after living in a crate with shredded newspaper all of their life, they will immediately go to your couch and jump on it and lay down like they have been doing it every day of their life. We used to say that the spirits of dogs that had already been rescued would communicate with the racers telling them how wonderful life will be when they get adopted and all the great things they will be able to enjoy. You have to remember, these dogs have very little extra flesh for padding and need a soft place to rest. One of my fondest memories is of an older brindle female that I rescued from a shelter. The dog officer in that town picked her up after she was seen wandering around for several days. She was probably around 7 or 8 years old, was very stiff and thin, and looked like she had several litters of puppies during her life. When I brought her into my house, she didn't know what to do, but in no time found her way to the couch. I loved walking into the living room and finding her contentedly laying flat on her back with all four feet sticking up in the air and sound asleep. She so deserved and earned it. It was an experience watching her learn how life could be. I named her Duchess because she was so gentle and loving, and always trying to please.

I have many, many stories and experiences, but there is one more I would like to include here. It is about a most elegant and gentle creature that I named Bubba Bullets. The main placement rep got a call from a vet that he had a dog that the owner had shot with 2 bullets. The vet was amazed and said it was a miracle that both bullets had gone straight through his body, just under his spine, and did not hit anything major. He would, however, need TLC during his recuperation. I fostered him for several months and to this day will never understand how that person could have taken a gun and shot that exquisite being. Bubba was a very tall and elegant boy, when he moved he appeared to float on air. After all he had been through, when you looked into his eyes, all you could see was love and forgiveness. There was not a mean bone in that dog's body. My house was already full, so after Bubba was healed, we found a very lovely woman who adopted him and gave him a wonderful home.

As happens in life, my situation no longer allows me to work with these incredible dogs, but my passion and love for them remains. To express those feelings I have created some designs and placed them on various products in my Zazzle gallery. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy creating them. The jumping greyhound I made from a photo I had and through the magic of digital art, created a metallic grey generic greyhound to represent them all. Here are a few of my items.

Choose your favorite image from my collection of flower, nature, and wildlife photos, and create a memory for that special person. I have two stores where you can purchase cards and invitations to personalize and customize. My shop at Greeting Card Universe is cards only, and I have many more images on cards that are not available in my Zazzle gallery. In my Zazzle gallery, all of my images are also available on mugs, T shirts, tote bags, magnets, postcards, keychains, and more, which you can also personalize.

For those of you who are not "techno savvy" (like I was myself not too long ago, and still have a long way to go), I will write some simple instructions here about how to use the editors on each site so you can create your own personal cards and messages. If you have any problems or special requests, please feel free to contact me.

Greeting Card Universe

In this shop, there is less creative flexibility because you cannot add text to the front of the card. You can, however, create the card and have it mailed directly to the recipient for the regular cost of a postage stamp. If you prefer to purchase from this store and would like text on the front of a card, please contact me and I can create it for you.

To add text to the inside of the card:

Click "Personalize Card"
Now you have the option to add text to the top inside, the bottom inside, and a closing. The instructions are the same for each part of the card you are personalizing.
Click on the section you wish to add text to. A box will pop up where you can select your font color, whether you would like the text centered, or left or right side aligned, font style, and font size.
Simply click your choice on each option.
Now click on the empty space of the card and type in your text and click "Save".
It will take a few seconds to generate your card, and then you can see what you have created. If you would like to make any changes, simply click again on that section and edit to your hearts content. There is even a spell check feature you can use.
Once everything looks the way you would like, click on "I approve the inside preview of my card" and then click on "Next Step".
From here on will be the ordering process for your personal card, just follow the directions.

Zazzle Gallery

In my Zazzle gallery, you have a lot more options. You can add or change any text on any item. In this store, you can add text to the front of all cards, to really create a personal message. After you have chosen your favorite image, you can either start from scratch with one of my blank note cards, or choose a card that already has text on it and change the text to your personal preferences.

First choose the size card - either greeting or note card size.
Click on "Customize it".
If you are starting with a blank card and want to add text to the front, click on "Add text". If you are using a card with text already on it, click "Change text".
A box will pop up - just type in the text you would like and then click "OK".
Here is where I really LOVE Zazzle - you have a lot of creative choices now. You can place the text anywhere on the card, choose your font style, size, and color. The following instructions are the same if you have started from scratch or are editing existing text.
Font - click on the font bar - it may take a few seconds for the box to pop up. Then click on your choice. It will immediately show on the card, if you like it, then click on "Close". If you would like to see what another font looks like, simply choose another font. Keep doing this until you have a font you like and click "Close".
Font Size - to change the font size go to the box with the number in it. You can either increase or decrease the size by simply hitting the + or - signs.
Text Color - to change the text color, click on the colored box and a color selection box will open up. Simply click on the color of your choice.
Text Placement - you can put the text anywhere on the card. Simply go to the image of the card and click on the text. A box will appear around the text, and using your mouse, just move it around to where you would like it.
Use these same instructions to place text on the inside top and bottom of the card.
You will notice a dotted outline on the cards, this is the "safe" area for any customization you might do. To print properly, BE SURE your text is always within these borders.
Once the card looks they way you want it, just click on "Add to cart" to purchase it.

It really is fun to do and can become quite addictive!! And now you have messages and greetings that are personal to the person you are giving the card to. I hope this will help you discover a whole new way of purchasing your greeting cards - Have Fun!

I have always loved inspirational and humorous sayings and quotes combined with beautiful art. In these very trying economic and turbulent times, I feel the affirmations and inspirations are needed as daily reminders more than ever. Sometimes, it really helps to look at something, especially when we are in the midst of some crisis or drama, to remind us that there is a purpose and a goal, even though we might not be aware of it at this particular moment.

For these reasons, I have been working on creating items in my Zazzle gallery that can be used in every day life and seen from time to time throughout your day. Such as a poster on the wall, a mousepad next to your computer, a keychain you use several times a day, or a mug you enjoy several cups of coffee or tea with each day.

My latest creative endeavor has been creating delightful and colorful digital art kaleidoscopes from my original fine art photographs. Roses Note Cards, Mugs, T Shirts, And More

Roses are one of my favorite flowers. So many different colors and varieties and lovely through all stages of life from a just opening rosebud to full bloom. This year was a little difficult for picture taking because we had a lot of rain. However, it turned out be be a "blessing in disguise" because of some of the stunning images I was able to capture with clinging raindrops.

Canadian Geese Photos, Cards, Mugs, T Shirts, And More

One of my favorite critters is wild Canadian geese. They are such beautiful and serene creatures! I've had a few experiences with them. My most personal experience was with an injured baby Canadian goose that was rescued by the person where I was boarding my horse many years ago. His name was Vladimir, Vladdy for short. I had the immense pleasure of watching him grow up and interacting with him. One of his wings was deformed from birth, as well as one of his feet. He could walk around just fine, but was never able to fly. He was a real character and I was very sad to say goodbye to him when I moved my horse. I will always remember him.

Another experience happened one day when I went to my favorite place to try and get some photos of them. I drove up and there was one young goose on the bank of the pond. I quietly parked my car and got out hoping to get some good shots of her before she moved away. However, I realized I was able to get too close to her and that something was wrong. She had had some kind of accident and one of her feet was badly injured and she couldn't walk. I became frantic and didn't know how to help her. I was also afraid to just leave her there because this was a place people came to fish and things and I was afraid someone might hurt her. As I was standing too close to her for her comfort level, she started crying out. Then across the pond from behind some cattails came the rest of her flock. They all started walking toward me to protect her. At that point, I decided I would leave and try to find a rehabber or someone who would know how to take care of her.

Luckily, my house was just a few minutes away, and after frantically searching the internet and making a few phone calls I found out there was no one who would be able to help. Feeling totally helpless I went back to see how she was and to try to decide what to do. When I returned to the pond, her flock had somehow managed to get her into the water and they were all swimming around her. She could swim fine. I then realized that it was now out of my hands and that her family would take care of her now and nature would take its course.

Then a truly magical thing happened. I started taking pictures of them all floating around. They all looked at me and started swimming towards me and came very close so I was able to get some nice shots. As they were looking at me I was filled with a sense of "Thank You" and when I finished taking my pictures, they all turned around and swam off to the other side of the pond.

Another time I was walking down a dirt road. All of a sudden several feet ahead of me a family of wild Canadian geese stepped out from the weeds. We were both startled to see each other and just stood there for several minutes looking at each other, not quite sure what to do. These geese were not used to being around people. Then they all just started walking straight toward me. I had no idea what they were doing, but I wasn't afraid of them so I started taking pictures. A few feet in front of me they veered off and I realized this was their route to the swamp. I watched them enter the swamp one by one and peacefully glide off. I felt very honored that they had decided I would not harm them and had chosen to just continue about their business. Here are a few items that I have images from that encounter on.

Here is a picture taken earlier in the year from the family of the injured goose. I just love this picture, they all look like they're just hangin' out. I entitled this picture "We Three Geese".

For this picture, I just happened to be driving by the reservoir and looked over and saw several large flocks of geese resting over. The scene was awesome with all those geese serenely floating around in the reflection of the autumn colored leaves on the water.

Another way to enjoy my photographs is with coffee mugs. All of my images at Smilin' Eyes Treasures can be put onto mugs, including travel size from my gallery on Zazzle.
